Recognising devolution

recognising_devolutionWe will need to be structured in a way that recognises the changes in the way Britain is governed. The Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly have full responsibility for setting policy on health and social care alongside a whole range of other areas. That means decisions about the support older people can get in Scotland and Wales from the NHS, social services, transport and other community services are all made in Edinburgh and Cardiff, not London.

Similarly in England a lot of decision making has moved to regional bodies. Government offices in each region implement policy according to needs in their area, and Strategic Health Authorities direct how health care is developed in each region.

So we need to find a way to work effectively at a regional level, as well as at a local level.
